Border Patrol

Border Patrol is the volunteer security group that operates during Renn Fayre with a primary goal of maintaining the privacy of the "private party" that is Renn Fayre; that is, we act to assure that the only people on-campus during the weekend are students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests. Border Patrol works extensively with Community Safety to accomplish this goal.

ALL BORDER PATROL VOLUNTEERS GET A BORDER PATROL T-SHIRT, YOURS TO KEEP, FOR VOLUNTEERING!

Border Patrol is run by one or two Lieutenants, who generally have experience working with Border Patrol and Community Safety. They coordinate and organize prior to Renn Fayre and help supervise during Renn Fayre itself.

Your 2008 Border Patrol Lieutenants are Alexa Moss and Robert Ericksen.

VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTIONS

Sergeant
This position is generally filled by experienced individuals selected by the Lieutenants. Sergeants serve as field supervisors during Renn Fayre. They have the task of keeping track of Border Patrol teams, ensuring adequate coverage of problem areas, helping to coordinate CSO cover of Border Patrol teams, and generally supporting the teams in the field. Sergeants also coordinate shift changes.
Patroller
The job of a Border Patroller is very simple -- make sure people who shouldn't be here aren't. This is accomplished by patrolling a designated zone of campus and spot-checking individuals for wristbands. Border Patrollers are expected to have good people skills and to be able to deal with individuals who may be uncooperative. Remember, we run into older neighbors trying to walk dogs as well as Cleevies trying to sneak on. Patrollers work closely with Community Safety Officers, who generally help cover Patrollers and deal with uncooperative or hostile individuals. Patrollers work 2-hour shifts over most of the weekend (though we don't run overnight like Karma Patrol does).

ZONE MANAGEMENT

For various reasons, Border Patrol operates at different levels at different times. To accomodate this need, we employ a simplified version of a concept called zone management (the full version is used by public safety agencies such as law enforcement, fire, and EMS). Most of the time, there are four teams on; they patrol according to the 4-Team plan below. However, at off-peak times when less coverage is necessary, two teams patrol according to the 2-Team plan below. Copies of the zone plans will be distributed to teams as they begin their shifts.
